What's on in Scotland

Welcome to Quine Magazine’s weekend guide, where we bring you the best of fashion, arts, and festivities happening in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Whether you’re in the mood for some relaxation, retail therapy, or entertainment, we’ve got you covered with our curated list of the best things to do in Scotland this weekend.

From a wonderful photographic exhibition in Glasgow to an Apres Ski style bar in Edinburgh, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Read on to discover our top picks and get ready to have a fabulous weekend.

Go backstage at the theatre

For almost eight years, singer-songwriter Jerry Burns has worked as a professional theatre dresser backstage at Theatre Royal Glasgow, collaborating with the likes of Bryan Ferry, Sarah Brightman, Massive Attack, and renowned film composer Craig Armstrong. Throughout her career, Jerry has taken the time to photograph the beauty, joy and emotion of life behind the scenes, and her evocative images are now being shared through a special exhibition, Girl in The Wings.

Free to visit on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Saturday, December 9 until the end of the month – and also for audiences prior to all performances of Christmas show Cinders! – the exhibition features 24 unique photographs from shows including Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, as well as a short ballet film, The Human Touch, starring Bethany Kingsley-Garner, principal dancer at Scottish Ballet. Lovers of theatre, ballet and photography (or all three!) won’t want to miss this special display.

Visit 282 Hope St, Glasgow G2 3QA

Be BAaD this Christmas

Visit Barras Art and Design (BAaD) on Sunday, December 10 for the venue’s Christmas Fun Day, featuring a Santa’s grotto, market stalls, live music and more. Open from 11am to 8pm, not only will you be able to tick items off your shopping list, the bar will be stocked with festive drinks, there’s a craft station for wee ones and, of course, Santa himself will make an appearance.

Take Christmas festivities to new heights

Everyone loves a rooftop bar but at Christmas, with snow covering the city below, it’s even more special to sip cocktails while enjoying the view. With that mind, pop along to Cold Town House’s new Magnum Apres Ski Terrace, which has been decorated with hundreds of sparkling lights and offers stunning views of Edinburgh Castle. Fur blankets are available to keep the chill at bay, while three Christmas cocktails, specially crafted with cream liqueur will warm you from the inside out.

Pot your crafting skills to the test

Why not get your hands dirty and learn a new skill this weekend? On Saturday, December 9 and Sunday 10, The Craft Pottery Studio, an independent pottery in Glasgow city centre, is holding festive hand building workshops, giving you the chance to make and paint a mug, pot or jug. During the two-hour seasonal workshop, attendees will be guided through the hand-building processes to build a piece approximately 7 to 10cm tall, before decorating with coloured slips (clay with pigment). The workshops are also BYOB, so grab a bottle of fizz and get crafty!
