A night to make new friends: inside our June Supper Club at Rioja Glasgow

There’s something special about the kind of conversation that only seems to happen at long tables — on Christmas Day, at weddings, or milestone birthdays — where the atmosphere makes it easy to connect, laugh, and let your guard down.

We wanted to bottle that feeling and bring it to life in a new way: a night shaped by the quietly growing desire so many of us have to meet new people and feel a bit more connected. The kind of night where you can lean in, laugh too loudly, and genuinely get to know someone new.

Our June Supper Club was born out of that idea — and brought together by a shared aim: to make real connections and build community. Whether you came solo or brought a friend, this was a night designed to be open-hearted, welcoming and fun from start to finish.

We took over Rioja Glasgow’s basement games area (which, by the way, you can hire out for your own private events — it’s the perfect tucked-away spot). With warm low lighting, it made the ideal backdrop for our beautifully candlelit tablescapes styled by Quine-friend Maria O’Neill of Maria Elizabeth Designs.

The space was just right — intimate enough for conversation, but with plenty of room for a few games, two live comedy sets, and a bit of mingling over cocktails.

Guests got to try chilli jam and chutney from Crunch Platters, a brilliant Scottish women-owned brand.

Drinks on the night came courtesy of The Glasgow Distillery Co., who served up two signature cocktails using their G52 Botanical Vodka range.

We also had delicious alcohol-free options by Quas Drinks for those going booze-free. Food-wise, guests enjoyed a spread of Spanish sharing plates from Rioja’s kitchen: crispy patatas bravas, loaded tacos, paella and more.

We kicked things off with some fun icebreaker games (promise: no name tags), and later, back-to-back live comedy from Rio McWilliams and Hannah Venters brought the laughs — warm, witty and sharply relatable sets that had everyone smiling well after the mic was down.

As the evening went on, what we loved most was seeing new friendships spark — people leaning in to chat, swapping numbers, and lingering at the end of the night not quite ready to go home.

Everyone left with a goody bag worth over £70, filled with full-size treats from Molton BrownTRESemméBarry M and more — but the real gift was the atmosphere. Relaxed, warm, inviting, thoughtful. Exactly what we hoped for.
