Fashion Influencers join Shelter Scotland in Preloved Donation Pledge

Girl second-hand shopping
Despite second-hand shopping being more popular than ever, charity shop donations have become somewhat overlooked. Shelter Scotland aims to breathe fresh life back into our beloved charity shops with their new initiative.
Shelter Scotland

If you’re anything like me, spending an afternoon leisurely browsing through charity shops is pure bliss. They’re like my happy place. I can spend hours just rummaging through racks of old treasures and scoring unique one-off pieces. Plus, let’s be real, shopping second-hand is the ultimate secret weapon against showing up to an event in the same outfit as someone else. No fashion faux pas for us, thank you very much!

But let’s face it, our wardrobes can quickly become overrun with unworn items, collecting dust while we fixate on finding the perfect occasion to wear them. My collection of 1960s party dresses are more like decorations than potential outfits. They bring me joy, but they rarely see the light of day. That’s why I was delighted to hear about Shelter Scotland’s Preloved Donation Pledge initiative, which encourages people to donate their preloved clothes to their shops and help raise funds for their work to end homelessness and bad housing. It’s a win-win situation: I get to declutter my wardrobe and give my clothes a new life, and Shelter Scotland gets to support their vital cause and make a difference in people’s lives.

The Preloved Donation Pledge is here to challenge the way we approach fashion. By making a commitment to donate our unworn items at least three times a year, not only are we reducing the environmental impact of fast fashion, but we’re also supporting the heart and soul of charity shops – the donations. What’s even more exciting, Shelter Scotland has partnered with some of Scotland’s most loved fashion influencers. Influencers like @colettecxo, @vegan.soph, @carolinesstylehacks, and @sustainable.stylist have generously donated their high-quality pieces from great brands. This is an exclusive opportunity to shop for pre-loved fashion items handpicked by these fashion gurus.

Shelter Scotland

Shelter Scotland invites everyone to join forces, and generously donate their preloved fashion items along with heartfelt messages for their new owners. This gesture aims to foster a sense of community among sustainable shoppers and create a lasting connection between the giver and the recipient; it also continues to keep fashion accessible for everyone, especially quality fashion, that others may not be able to purchase new, or at full price.

Did you know the average person in the UK owns a whopping 118 articles of clothing? But here’s the kicker – a disheartening 26% of them remain untouched for an entire year. Let that sink in. The fashion industry’s responsibility for 8-10% of global emissions is no joke. It’s time for us to take action and make a difference. By actively participating in donating and shopping second-hand at Shelter Scotland’s stores, we have the power to do just that. We can reduce waste, mitigate those harmful environmental impacts, and infuse our fashion choices with newfound purpose.

Let’s not forget the incredible work that Shelter Scotland does in the face of the disheartening housing crisis. In September 2022 alone, there were a staggering 28,944 cases of homelessness in Scotland, representing an 11% increase compared to the previous year. By donating and shopping at their stores, we’re not only offering immediate relief to those facing homelessness, but we’re also fuelling Shelter Scotland’s invaluable frontline services. They provide free expert assistance to those in need, making a tangible difference in the lives of the most vulnerable.

So, my second-hand shopping loving friends, let’s embrace the Preloved Donation Pledge and show the world that sustainable style can be fun, exciting, and meaningful. Let’s donate those unworn pieces, put our fashion superpowers to good use, and make a lasting impact together. And who knows? Maybe one of my 1960s party dresses will finally find its perfect match. Anyone out there throwing regular Mad Men themed parties?
