I tried a 3-day wellness retreat in Troon under £500—it’s well worth the money (+ what to pack)
Gemma launched Quine Magazine in 2023, after working in newspapers…
I know everyone has at least one New Year’s resolution that goes something like, “Take better care of myself.” But let’s be honest: as we sit surrounded by leftover Christmas desserts, half-empty tins of Fox’s biscuits, and endless blocks of cheese that “need using up,” January is already feeling less like a fresh start and more like a mission to clear out the fridge.
If the festive fog isn’t quite sparking your glow-up, why not trade it all for a bracing breath of fresh sea air? Escape to the charming seaside town of Troon for a wellness retreat designed to help you reset—mind, body, and soul. I gave this retreat a try earlier this year, and here’s how it went (and what to pack…).
First Impressions
Arriving at Marine Troon on a typically blustery Scottish afternoon, I was immediately taken by the hotel’s character. It’s the kind of place that whispers luxury without shouting about it. The interiors combine rich tartans, clashing yet charming wallpapers, and thoughtful nods to Scotland’s golfing heritage. My room, with its plush bedding and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran, was the perfect cocoon to unwind and relax in between the retreat’s itinerary.
The hotel’s amenities are equally impressive. Marine Troon’s spa is a sanctuary in itself. A heated indoor pool with panoramic views of the coastline, a jacuzzi, a sauna—perfect for defrosting after a cold-water dip—and a fully equipped gym make it an ideal destination for a wellness retreat. The team’s attention to detail ensures every guest feels truly pampered.
About Sophie Hellyer
At the heart of this retreat is Sophie Hellyer, a cold-water swimmer, surfer, and yoga instructor with an impressive résumé. Originally from Devon, Sophie’s career has taken her from champion surfer to environmental advocate. She’s delivered TEDx talks, written for major publications like The Independent, and founded Rise Fierce, a collective empowering women through wild swimming and mindfulness practices. Her warm, approachable energy makes her the perfect guide for this transformative weekend, ensuring even the most hesitant participants feel at ease.
A Feast for the Senses
Food is central to this retreat—not just as fuel but as part of the overall restorative experience. Breakfast options are as indulgent as they are nourishing: creamy porridge topped with heather honey, smashed avocado with perfectly poached eggs, or the hearty comfort of a full Scottish breakfast.
Lunch is the main event, served as vibrant sharing platters showcasing the best seasonal Scottish produce. Grilled salmon, hearty winter vegetable salads, and tangy tomatoes paired with creamy burrata create a menu that’s both delicious and Instagram-worthy. Even the desserts feel restorative—the coconut rice pudding is an absolute highlight.
Dinners at The Rabbit are intimate and comforting, offering dishes like slow-cooked Ayrshire pork and fresh, locally caught seafood. It’s the type of food that leaves you feeling satisfied yet energised for the activities ahead.
Cold Water Dips: A Thrill Worth Trying
The cold-water dips are not for the faint-hearted, but they might just become the highlight of your retreat. A short walk from the hotel takes you to the chilly waters of the Firth of Clyde, where Sophie Hellyer expertly guides you through the experience. The initial plunge is intense, but focusing on your breath turns the moment into one of calm clarity.
Afterwards, rushing back to the sauna is pure joy. The heat envelops you, easing your muscles and leaving you with a satisfying endorphin high. It’s an exhilarating experience that’s both a challenge and a reward—and one that just might spark a new winter hobby.
Exploring Troon
Beyond the retreat, Troon itself is a treasure trove of charm. On Sunday morning, I wandered down to the beach, where locals were windsurfing on the sparkling waves. Others strolled with their dogs, while a few brave souls took their own dips in the icy water. The energy was infectious, and I could have spent hours simply watching the world go by.
If you have time to explore, the town offers plenty of cosy cafes for a warm coffee or a light bite. For the more active, renting a bike from the hotel to explore the area is a great way to extend the sense of adventure.
