Unfolded clothing

In today’s fashion landscape, the conversation around overconsumption looms large. Since you began reading this, 108,000 clothing items have been discarded into landfills due to overproduction. It’s this alarming statistic that has propelled Unfolded, a sustainable fashion brand based in Edinburgh, to revolutionise the way we shop for clothes.

Unfolded’s mission is ambitious—to change the way people shop and make the fashion industry more sustainable. By involving their community in the design process, Unfolded ensures demand-driven production, minimising waste and environmental impact. The latest spring/summer 2024 collection, co-created by over 5,000 shoppers, epitomises this collaborative approach to design.

After being invited to their recent Edinburgh pop-up to view their last range, I decided to give Unfolded’s clothing a try. Here’s my take on their clothing and their new approach to shopping…

How does Unfolded’s waste-free vision of shopping actually work?

Unfolded’s waste-free vision of shopping is simple yet effective. By involving their community in the design process and only producing after customers order, they ensure that every garment meets actual demand, minimising overproduction and waste. This does mean that you need to wait 4-6 weeks for the delivery, however, the result is worth the wait for a more sustainable and ethical shopping experience for all.

What is the process like?

The process at Unfolded is refreshingly collaborative. As a member of their community, I had the opportunity to co-create the latest collection, providing input on everything from prints to styles. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of ownership and connection, making the shopping experience truly unique.

What were the clothes like?

Unfolded’s clothes exceeded my expectations. Each piece exuded quality and style. From the corduroy dress to the green linen shirt and shorts set, here are my thoughts and how I’d style them:

The corduroy dress (£46) instantly stole the show for me—it’s like it was made for every season. In spring, I’d pair it with knit cardigans and delicate blouses, then throw on some ankle boots or ballet flats for a chic and effortless look.

At £46, it’s significantly more affordable and offers better value for money than what you would expect to pay for a style like this from bigger, fast-fashion retailers.

In summer, this dress is perfect for a boho ’70s vibe. Pair it with retro floral prints, crochet accessories, oversized sunglasses, and sandals. As autumn rolls around, I’d style it with coloured knit tights layered under jumpers and topped with chunky boots.

Even when winter’s chill sets in, this dress still shines. You could pair it with a metallic blouse and velvet platforms for a Christmas party look, proving its adaptability once again.

The green linen shirt (£18) and shorts (£16) set is perfect for summer. I’d wear the shirt tied at the front with big shades and a floppy hat for a 50s-inspired beach look that is straight out of a vintage postcard.

The corduroy jacket (£45) is a must-have for spring, it’s perfect for those transitional seasons. Whether thrown over floral dresses or layered with jeans, it adds a touch of rustic-chic to any outfit.

I’m throwing it over floral dresses in spring, layering it with cosy knits in winter, and basically living in it year-round. It’s effortlessly chic and pairs with everything—jeans, ditzy-print mini dresses, you name it.

The cotton white t-shirt (£11) has become my go-to staple, it’s a wardrobe essential. Seriously, I haven’t taken it off since it arrived. Its thick, stretchy cotton fabric makes it incredibly comfortable and durable, perfect for everyday wear. And the best part? It’s sustainable.

The coral dress (£30) is both flattering and versatile, and the price is a steal for the amount of wear I will get out of this. I’m talking office chic one moment, and wedding guest glam the next.

Pair it with a coordinating blazer for that extra touch of sophistication to the office, or go all out with gold heels, statement earrings, and a bold belt for a special occasion.

Would I shop this way again?

Absolutely. My experience with Unfolded has reaffirmed my commitment to sustainable fashion. Knowing that my purchase has a positive impact on people, the planet, and my purse makes the shopping experience all the more rewarding.

We all know there are a large number of fast-fashion retailers whose quality has dropped over the years, while their prices have rocketed up. I’ve found that Unfolded is a breath of fresh air; it offers quality items at an affordable, fair price

What positive impact has my order had?

By choosing to shop at Unfolded, I’ve contributed to a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry. My purchase directly supports fair wages for garment workers and children’s education initiatives, making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
