I feel like a cooler, more relaxed version of myself in Copenhagen, just like the locals. They have such a great sense of style and life, and I’m not alone in admiring them: TikTok is full of videos about the best spots in Copenhagen, from stylish cafés to luxury vintage stores to cosy wine bars. These are just some of the things that make Copenhagen a trend-setting metropolis.
Earlier this month, I had the chance to intern with Baum und Pferdgarten, one of the top Danish fashion houses, during Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW). They presented their SS24 collection, and it was so exciting to be a part of it.
I had been to Copenhagen before, but I always find something new to discover in this city. During my stay, I tried new restaurants and visited the Design Museum Denmark, which I had missed last time. The weather was unpredictable, with rain and wind every day. It was not very convenient, but it made me feel a bit more at home in the Danish capital.
6:30 AM: I wake before my alarm, due to the excitement of my first day in the Baum und Pferdgarten office. Although I’m not needed until 11 AM, the thoughts of what to wear, and which breakfast pastries to try first, keep my mind wandering.
9:30 AM: I leave the apartment and head to the city centre. My first stop is the Copenhagen bakery chain, BUKA, whose decorative pastries you may have seen on Instagram. My breakfast order of an oat-milk chai latte and Nutella croissant goes down very quickly, with the warm chai working wonders in settling my pre-office nerves.
11 AM: I arrive at Baum’s Head Office – a stunning cream building which appears filled with architectural history. It’s easy to locate my new workplace, and whose company flag can be found waving proudly outside, like a welcome sign for Fashion Week-goers.
11:30 AM – 14:30 AM: My first day consists of assisting the press team with Influencer and VIP dressings ahead of the show. These dressings have taken place all morning and during the previous few days. A typical Danish breakfast spread greets the busy guests, many of whom have such intense schedules that only allow only for a pit-stop dressing.
3 PM: My workday ended sooner than expected, with most dressing appointments complete. I decide to spend the rest of my afternoon sightseeing (or as some would call it, shopping). The gusty weather calls for comfort-food, so I head to Men-o Ramen for dinner, which serves my favourite broth in the city.
9:00 AM: Today is the much-anticipated show day! I am not scheduled in the office until 2PM, so opt for a lie-in after my early start yesterday. My morning routine follows the same pattern as the day before.
2 PM: I arrive in the office where model fittings, hair and make-up are already in motion. From the outside things may appear frantic, but previous experience tells me these preparations operate more as organised chaos. I want to stay and watch the make-up artists at work, but head upstairs to be briefed with the rest of the seaters. We spend the afternoon organising guest cards and seating arranging, all of which while the rain continues to pour. Not ideal weather for an outdoor fashion show.
6:30 PM: The show guests begin to arrive, and it is all systems go. I meet and greet guests with a smile and access the seating arrangements via mobile app, walking guests to their viewing locations. The outfits on display are incredible, with most guests wearing a sea of bright colours to match the Baum und Pferdgarten aesthetic. The guests had created a catwalk of their own, before the SS24 presentation had even begun.
7 PM – 7:30 PM: After months of preparations, the show takes place in a rapid eight minutes. Thankfully, the SS24 collection takes stage without a drop of rain. Titled A Postcard from Copenhagen, this collection paid homage to the iconic culture of Copenhagen through the viewpoint of tourists. A series of fresh denim looks, lace detailing, and defining gingham moments graced the runway in a playful nature.
