Whisky aficionado Moa Nilsson, also known as @swedishwhiskygirl on Instagram and TikTok, has a deep passion for uncovering the finest venues to savour Scotland’s national drink. When she’s not sharing her love of whisky with her growing online community, Moa explores Edinburgh’s vibrant bar scene, discovers unique cocktails, and champions Scotland’s rich whisky heritage. We asked Moa for her top recommendations for new bars in Edinburgh and classic venues to enjoy a dram or whisky cocktail this winter.
The city offers an enticing mix of cosy, elegant, and lively venues perfect for enjoying whisky from Edinburgh. Narrowing down the choices is no easy task, but here are some of Moa’s personal favourites that she’ll be visiting over the winter season.
Gleneagles Townhouse
Gleneagles Townhouse is a stunning venue and one of my favourite places to enjoy a cup of tea, a bite to eat, or—of course—cocktails. This season, I’d recommend trying “The Walnut,” a winter-perfect cocktail with notes of walnuts, whisky, and dates. Whether you’re visiting for a cosy catch-up or a special evening out, Gleneagles Townhouse is always a memorable spot.
1820 at Johnnie Walker Princes Street
The 1820 rooftop bar at Johnnie Walker Princes Street not only boasts one of the best views in Edinburgh but also serves some of the finest whisky highballs I’ve ever had. Be sure to chat with the staff for personalised recommendations and try something adventurous—you might discover a flavour combination you never expected. For anyone curious about whisky tasting in Edinburgh, this spot is a must.
The Black Cat
The Black Cat is a delightful pub that hosts live music on certain evenings, making it a lively yet cosy option. Their selection of whisky from Edinburgh and beyond is impressive, and the knowledgeable staff are always on hand to help craft a flight of whiskies tailored to your taste. Don’t miss out on their Hot Toddy—a perfect way to warm up after wandering Edinburgh’s festive streets.
The Register Club
Tucked away in a beautiful setting, The Register Club feels like a chic hidden gem. This sophisticated venue currently features “The Buccaneer,” a signature cocktail crafted with whisky, allspice, vanilla, and verjus. It’s a delightful drink to enjoy in the elegant ambiance, making it a standout whisky bar in Edinburgh.
The Scotch Whisky Experience
For a more affordable spot to enjoy a dram, look no further than The Scotch Whisky Experience. Their Amber Bar offers an extensive wall of Scottish whiskies to choose from, and the staff are excellent at guiding you to your perfect match. If cocktails are more your thing, try the “Uiscafaidh” (a whisky twist on an Espresso Martini) or the classic “Rob Roy.” This venue is ideal for whisky tasting in Edinburgh and offers a welcoming atmosphere.
Nauticus
Located in Leith, Nauticus is a charming pub that celebrates Scottish brands and flavours. The staff here are friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, making it easy to explore their range of whisky and cocktails. Whether you’re after a neat pour or a creative concoction, Nauticus is a fantastic choice for a night out.
