The “Big Matt” returns to Hawksmoor Edinburgh — one of the best burgers in Edinburgh for just £16

A menu icon, back by popular demand.

If your idea of a good lunch includes double cheese and beef dripping fries, Hawksmoor might be your new midday go-to.

This month, their famously juicy, gloriously indulgent burger — The Big Matt — is back. It’s been crowned the No. 1 Burger in the World for 2023. We’re not making this up. First launched in New York, it went viral for all the right reasons. Now, it’s hitting Hawksmoor menus across the UK and Ireland, including Edinburgh, as a lunchtime special.

Looking for the best burgers in Edinburgh? Hawksmoor’s cult favourite, The Big Matt, is now a lunchtime special at their Edinburgh restaurant.

Named after Hawksmoor’s Group Executive Chef Matt Brown, The Big Matt is basically a love letter to a certain golden-arched fast food classic. But this one’s grown up a bit. We’re talking two dry-aged beef patties, double American cheese, Hawksmoor’s special sauce, shredded lettuce, onions and pickles — all stacked together like it means business. On the side? Beef dripping fries, naturally.

It’ll set you back just £16 — which, for something this stacked and satisfying, feels like a bit of a steal. You’ll leave full, happy, and possibly in need of a nap.

But it’s not just about burgers. Running through spring, Hawksmoor are rolling out a new line-up of lunch specials — each one just as tempting. There’s a 35-day dry-aged rump steak with Café de Paris butter, fries and salad (£23), and roast hake with creamed potatoes, woodland mushrooms and lemon butter sauce (£23). If meat’s not your thing, there’s a charcoal-roasted butternut squash option too, with shiitake, oyster mushrooms and cashew ricotta (£18).

From burgers to roast fish, Hawksmoor’s new lunch menu is a flex of flavour, with something for every appetite.

There’s also charcoal-roasted chicken with garlic, lemon and parsley (£21), if you’re after something classic-but-hearty. Each dish keeps that signature Hawksmoor feel: rich, comforting, and anchored in great ingredients. Basically, they’ve made it impossible to be “just here for the burger.”

Still, The Big Matt is the headline act. Originally launched in 2017, it was never meant to be the star. Yet people couldn’t stop asking for it. It’s quietly earned cult status among burger fans — which probably explains the reappearance.

You can order it Wednesday to Friday, 12–3pm, or Saturdays from 12–5pm. Whether it’s a midweek pick-me-up or a weekend treat, it’s well worth the visit.
