Scotland’s first cat-only grooming salon lands in Glasgow

PURR Glasgow cat grooming salon

Glasgow’s feline residents now have their own beauty spot. PURR Salon, the first cat-only grooming salon in Scotland, has officially opened its doors in Morris Park. This new space, run by cat-lover-turned-groomer Dr Brittnee Leysen, is designed with one thing in mind—keeping cats calm, clean, and looking their best.

The 396-square-foot salon sits in Unit 88, where whiskered clients are treated to ear, eye, and teeth cleaning, coat brushing, and fur de-matting. There’s also the playfully named “pawdicure,” which involves a nail trim and paw pad massage. It’s all very civilised.

The new space builds on the success of PURR’s mobile grooming service, which filled up so quickly in 2024 that Dr Leysen decided to put down roots and open a permanent spot.

Originally from the US, Dr Leysen moved to Scotland in 2015 for a master’s degree at the University of Glasgow, followed by a PhD. Along the way, she started PURR as a side project, combining her love for cats with professional training in feline grooming. “I grew up with Persian cats, and I’ve always wanted to work with them,” she says. “There are an estimated 840,000 cats in Scotland, and not many groomers by comparison. I thought, why are there no cat salons here? That’s how the idea for PURR came about.”

The salon itself is designed for relaxation—no barking dogs, no stressful crates. At any given time, there will be a maximum of four cats inside, each with its own space before and after grooming. Owners can choose to stay and watch or leave their pets in PURR’s capable hands. “With this space, I want to reassure owners that their cats are in a safe, caring environment,” says Dr Leysen. “Every treatment is designed for their comfort and wellbeing.”

Beyond the practical benefits of a good groom—fewer furballs, cleaner coats, healthier nails—Dr Leysen sees PURR as a place where cat lovers can connect. The salon’s jungle-inspired interior, complete with a mural by Glasgow artist Alice NicBhatair, adds to the cosy-yet-quirky vibe. A viewing window lets passersby peek in at the process, and a custom neon sign by Abbey Black of Albursts lights up the space.
