A brand-new way to experience the magic of photography is arriving in Edinburgh. Starting tomorrow, 19 October, Stills Centre for Photography will unveil Scotland’s first and only analogue photobooth available to the public. This retro delight will transport visitors back to a time when film photography was at its peak, offering a chance to capture moments in timeless, vintage style.
Loved by cultural icons like John Lennon and Yoko Ono, as well as John and Jackie Kennedy, analogue photobooths have seen a revival in cities like New York, Berlin, and London. Now, Scotland is about to join that list, with this photobooth becoming a must-see for locals and visitors alike. Dating back to 1925, the booth’s rich history and connection to film photography make it more than just a quirky attraction – it’s a piece of living history that offers a unique way to capture moments with friends, family, or even solo, in a cherished set of prints.
Caitlin Serey, Development Manager at Stills, shares her excitement: “We envision that introducing an analogue photobooth will further enrich Stills through its historical significance and cultural value. By bringing this booth to Stills, we’ll revive a vanishing form of photographic expression and actively participate in its preservation. Importantly, it will be the only analogue photobooth in all of Scotland, making it a focal point for both regular visitors and new enthusiasts seeking authentic, vintage photography experiences.”
This one-of-a-kind photobooth will also contribute to the future of Stills, a registered charity, by providing a new source of income, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the gallery.
Made possible through Project Echo and supported by Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council, and the William Grant Foundation, the ‘Stillsautomat’ is set to become an unmissable addition to Edinburgh’s cultural landscape. Whether you’re a photography fan or simply looking for a unique experience, this photobooth is bound to capture your imagination – and your best angles.
