Zara Taboo on The Bus Quine My City

Welcome back to Quine Magazine’s ‘My City’, our interview series where we gather insider recommendations for the best hidden gems, eateries, boutiques, and the places to be from our favourite movers and shakers across Scotland.

Zara, the 20-year-old host behind the viral TikTok sensation ‘Taboo on the Bus’, calls Edinburgh home, where she fearlessly navigates the city’s streets aboard the iconic red Lothian buses.

From delving into the latest wellness trends on TikTok to shining a light on the intricacies of UK drink and drug culture, Zara brings a fresh perspective to Edinburgh’s discourse. Here, she unveils her cherished haunts and hidden gems, offering a glimpse into the vibrant pulse of the capital.

From bustling markets to quaint boutiques, where do you find the best shopping experiences in Edinburgh?

I find that the best shops are always the independent stores and charity shops. Portobello is the best spot for thrifted clothing finds, right by the beach! Then for little gifts and nice items, my go-to spots are Armchair Books, Pie in the Sky, and all of the little gift shops on Bruntsfield Road.

What are some of your favourite coffee shops for studying/working?

I always end up at the same few spots because there is a real lack of laptop-friendly cafes here that actually have reliable Wi-Fi! My go-to is, of course, Mayvn on George Street. I like 92 degrees too on Hanover Street; they do a great iced coffee. Those are the only two I go between for proper laptop sessions as I can trust they have sockets, Wi-Fi, and good coffee.

Where do you find yourself craving a delicious meal time and time again?

I will always be craving a panini and soup from Gaia on Leith Walk. I found out about that gem when I first moved here and have never had a bad lunch date there. They do a great hot chocolate and pastry too!

Where is your go-to date night spot?

I am bad for going to the same spot over and over again with my girlfriend. It was previously Casa Blanca until they closed at the new year. I was there so often I ended up becoming on a first-name basis with the staff. The new go-to is Paradise Palms; they do incredible cocktails, and it is really eclectic inside.

Where do you go to meet other creatives, and what’s your advice for finding creative networking opportunities across the city?

Instagram seems to be the place for finding networking and creative opportunities. I follow a lot of cafes and venues that host events – such as Lovecrumbs, so I seem to find opportunities this way. Also, having a look on Eventbrite is great, especially around summer for finding workshops and events that are on locally.

Do you have a favourite cultural spot in the city for discovering new art, music, or fashion?

I get such inspiration from just a walk around town. I get such fashion inspiration from people-watching; there are always lots of cool-dressed girls walking around town to take inspiration from.

Finally, bus or tram for getting around the city?

I am a bus girl! I still get free bus travel because I am only 20, hence the podcast and consistent bus travel.
